5 Google Business Profile mistakes that could be costing you customers

Key takeaways

  • A Google Business Profile is not a set-and-forget listing. It works best when it stays active and accurate.
  • Fresh photos, posts and offers give customers a reason to trust you and give Google more to understand about your business.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad. Most customers expect a reply, and they read how you respond.
  • Five minutes a day and one update a week is enough to keep a profile current.

When people need a local business, most of them start on Google. They compare profiles, read reviews and check opening hours before they ever call or visit. BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and Google is still the review site they use most.

That is why so many businesses set up a Google Business Profile. The problem is what happens next. Many profiles are created once, filled in, and never touched again. Over time the photos get old, the hours drift out of date, reviews go unanswered, and the profile slowly stops working for the business.

Here are five common Google Business Profile mistakes, with practical Google Business Profile tips and the simple habits that fix them.

Mistake 1: Creating your profile and forgetting about it

A Google Business Profile is not a “set it and forget it” tool. It is a live shop window that customers see on Google Search and Google Maps, often before they see your website.

A profile that has not changed in months gives customers very little to go on. There are no recent photos, no news and no replies to reviews, so they cannot tell whether the business is still running or how it treats people. An active profile tells them you are open, busy and paying attention.

It also matters for visibility. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and it says that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. An inactive profile misses chances to show up well for the searches that matter to you. If you want to optimise your Google Business Profile, keeping it active is the first step.

Mistake 2: Letting your profile go stale

Fresh content is the easiest way to show that a business is active. Google lets you add photos and videos and publish Google Business Profile posts that appear on your profile in Search and Maps. Keep it fresh with:

  • Recent photos of your work, your team, your premises and your products
  • Short videos that show the business in action
  • Up-to-date products and services, with clear descriptions
  • Posts with company news and updates
  • Offers and promotions, with start and end dates
  • Events, from open days to workshops
  • Announcements of new products, services or opening hours

Fresh content helps customers trust you, because they can see what you do today, not three years ago. It also gives Google more information about what your business offers.

Mistake 3: Ignoring your reviews

Google reviews are often the first thing people read, and many of them also read how the business replied.

  • Good reviews deserve appreciation. Thank the customer by name and mention what they enjoyed.
  • Negative reviews deserve professionalism. Stay calm, acknowledge the problem, and offer to put it right offline.

According to the same BrightLocal survey, 89% of consumers expect business owners to respond to reviews, and 80% say they are likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews. Half are put off by generic, copy-and-paste replies, so write each one yourself.

Your reply is written for the next customer as much as for the reviewer.

Mistake 4: Leaving your details out of date

Wrong opening hours, an old phone number or a missing holiday closure costs you customers directly. Someone drives over and finds the door locked, or calls a number that no longer works.

Google is clear on this point: if your business information is not accurate, your profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area. Check your hours, phone number, website, address and services whenever anything changes, and set special hours ahead of public holidays.

Mistake 5: Not answering what customers want to know

Customers come to your profile with questions: Do you deliver? Is there parking? Do you take bookings? Google has been replacing the old questions and answers section on profiles with an AI “Ask” feature that answers from the information on your profile and your reviews (confirmed by Google in December 2025).

That makes the content of your profile more important, not less. If your services, attributes, description and posts answer the common questions, customers get the right answer, wherever they ask it.

Why Google pays attention to active businesses

Google wants to show people businesses that are open, accurate and trusted. That is the heart of local SEO. A well-kept profile sends signals that support that picture:

Signal What it shows
Updated content The business is operating today
Customer interactions People use and talk about the business
Recent photos What customers will actually find
Review responses The business listens to its customers
Accurate information Customers can rely on the details
Regular activity Someone is looking after the profile

The more positive activity there is, the more confidence Google can have in showing your business for relevant local searches. No single action guarantees a ranking, and Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can control is a profile that is complete, accurate and active.

  2. Fresh contentPhotos and a weekly post
  3. Customer trustRecent activity and replies

How a few minutes a day adds up

Spend five minutes a day

You do not need hours each week. A short daily routine covers almost everything:

  • Reply to new reviews
  • Upload one photo
  • Check your business hours, including holiday hours
  • Make sure your phone number, website and address are correct
  • Check what customers are asking about and keep your profile’s answers up to date
  • Publish one update every week

Put it in your calendar at the same time each day, or share it out across the team.

Final thoughts

When it comes to your Google Business Profile, consistency matters more than effort. Five minutes a day keeps your profile current, builds trust with the people reading it, and strengthens your local online presence over time.

Questions and answers

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Check it for a few minutes every day for new reviews and changes to your details, add photos regularly, and publish at least one post a week. Consistency matters more than spending hours on it once a month.

Does replying to reviews improve my Google ranking?

Google does not promise that. It says replies show customers you value their feedback, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Replies also help people who are deciding whether to choose you.

Do Google Business Profile posts expire?

Google archives posts older than six months unless the post has a date range, such as an offer or an event. Posting regularly keeps recent updates on your profile.

Can I pay Google for a better local ranking?

No. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Complete, accurate and active profiles give you the best chance of showing up for relevant searches.
